CRAP + Stable Stuff = JULinux 9

I don't like to badmouth anyone or anything but I want to tell you what is happening in the JULinux world. For reasons still unknown to me JULinux 8.5 beta has issues with the Finish Install script that I need to fix or have a friend fix.

So what will JULinux 9 be? Well it will be what JULinux has always been. We take Ubuntu and fix Canotical's mistakes the best we can and then shrink it down as small as we can and put a Finish Install script in it. Sounds easy doesn't it? You would think so but Ubuntu is becoming more and more unique and all together different from what Debian based distributions looked like and acted like just a few years ago when we were still using xorg.conf files, were able to change the settings for screen savers and customize them, had a customizable ALSA mixer, and every game made to work on Ubuntu just worked, and the hardware support was great. Also the people in the IRC chat rooms were uber geeks who could diagnose and fix any problem.

Now days it seems like everything has changed. Although NVIDIA's proprietary drivers still rely on the xorg.conf file to load and save settings Ubuntu has stopped providing support for it crippling NVIDIA's awesome configuration tool. PulseAudio is suppose to be completely reverse compatible with ALSA and allow ALSA dependent apps to run correctly however this is not always the case. I have to admit ALSA does not play nice when an HDMI video card is present. Wine just doesn't work like it use to on it's own and needs PlayOnLinux to be complete but most people don't know that. Having the computer save in .doc, .xls, and .ppt by default is a must for M$ office bound users but instead users are daunted with strange open source file formats that their bosses and teachers can't open and will not accept. Everyone is pushing for ATI's use with Linux because it's more open source but lets face it NVIDIA just works better. The Gnome interface scares my clients when I try to introduce them to Linux so JULinux has the well known ( http://download.famouswhy.com/julinux/ ) custom interface based on GnomeXP that is much easier for users to interact with and is much more intuitive.

JULinux 9 presents more challenges because Ubuntu seems to have removed Gnome ALSA and other ALSA packages from the repositories so the existing JULinux scripts will not work. Libraries and codecs for OpenShot Video Editor have also been removed. The solution is to get these packages from a different source and insert them into the Finish Install. The problem is that mixing packages into Ubuntu that are designed for a pure Debian distribution can cause problems. The plan is to at least temporarily enable Debian repositories in Ubuntu where the packages can still be found and then after the packages are installed remove these repositories so that there are no conflicts with Ubuntu. I have done this before with Ultumix. Why not just stick with Debian? Debian just doesn't have the same hardware support Ubuntu has. Another issue I hope they get figured out is getting the right version of Blender installed so OpenShot Video Editor will work with it. It would be nice to have the new CG stuff work in OpenShot.

A lot of people are telling me people are in the mood to revolt against Ubuntu and start over with another distribution to replace it that is once again community driven and not Canotical driven.

JULinux8 v0.1.8.2 has recieved the Famous Software Award!

Yes it's true as with many other sites JULinux8 has picked up a lot of steam and has been gaining publicity.
"The Famous Software Award has been initiated by Download.FamousWhy.com to recognize "Famous Software", which come up with innovative and efficient ways to reflect the best relationship with users assuring their satisfaction."
Of course this only begs the question why hasn't Distrowatch.com listed us yet? Macintosh) + Canotical + and Ubuntu (what use to be a community distribution) and put them together? You get Macinotical or Ubuntu 10.04. When people using JULinux upgrade to 10.04 the most noticeable difference is that while it still looks and acts like Windows the minimise, restore, and close button switch sides on the screen even if some how you missed the fact that the startup changed as well. So why does Ubuntu keep changing their boot? Maybe they are sick and tired of people like me coming along, cleaning up their bugs, and remastering Ubuntu into a distribution that works. I don't know.

I've had people call me and ask why Justin does your JULinux distribution work right and Ubuntu suck? Well maybe that's because I fix all the bugs I can find. What really gets me is why other people who are approved as official remasters don't fix these bugs. One bug is Pulse Audio. Just having it can cause tons of problems for people with the wrong hardware not to mention you loose control over your audio hardware. So in this instance I revert to something that I know works on every system. (ALSA). It's little things like this that add up to a very happy user.

One thing to note is that this year Apple made more sales than Microsoft. Ya that's right! So maybe that's why Ubuntu has switched gears and gone in the Mac Attack Direction.

It's almost impossible anyway to convert a Macintosh user to Linux. Usually I don't even try.

In this one case I may make an exception. One of my cousins who uses an Apple Laptop came and showed me his system was unable to attach / upload anything to the net. Didn't matter if he used Safari or Firefox. WOW! So If Linux can run his games there really isn't a reason for him to keep using his Mac OS.

Most of the time however most people will take their Macs to the grave with them. I'm not sure why. Personally I hate Macs especially the new ones that have those cheap quad core Intel heating elements inside. But of course you need to pay over $1,000 to get one. That way you can heat your apartment while using your computer.

So then we must ask the question is all this "Green" or environmentally friendly? Linux uses very low system resources to do a task. Windows Vista and 7 however use tons of hardware resources (check the minimum hardware requirements) to do the same thing Linux does. While Macs run ok they sure put out a lot of heat and use a lot of electricity thanks to Intel.

That's why (I'm not selling anything here) you should buy a computer (from me or someone else) that has an AMD processor, NVIDIA graphics, and Linux installed to be as environmentally friendly as you can if you believe in being green.

www.justuselinux.com

Reviews.

"it is so much better than windows or mac...more user friendly and easier to use. ...i am super happy with julinux!" Cody Long

"I just started using julinux a few days ago. They are using Wild Blue Internet (a dish). The ping rates were at 1500ms to Google.com (usual pings on this type of connection are between 150 - 500ms) So the first thing I did was reboot the PC and boot a Live Linux environment where no Windows problems could interfere. Still I could not get a solid
connection.

After calling the local Wild Blue Tech and asking him what to do I unplugged the router, plugged the computer directly into the modem, rebooted both the modem and the computer. What I found next was very disturbing to Wild Blue and Direct TV. The modem was in bridged mode and neither the installer, Wild Blue, or Direct TV did this.

After getting threw to Direct TV (can't call Wild Blue directly for this account) it was explained to me that the user had exceeded their uploading bandwidth for that month. WAIT! First of all don't most of us download too much stuff and not upload it? Second of all the only use for this computer was E-Mail, web browsing, and typing / printing.

Figured it out yet?

The first guess the Direct TV tech had was that a torrent client was in
use. WRONG! My guess was a Zombie Virus was in use. Correct!

What is a Zombie Virus? Oh just a virus that takes over any and all Windows computers and does the hacker's bidding. In this case uploading. This hacker also managed to hack into and alter the settings of the user's router and modem! WOW!

Why would the hacker do this? Well by putting the modem into bridged mode this removes the main firewall / NAT from the network allowing the hacker transparent access into the network.

According to Direct TV only they or Wild Blue could get into the modem and program it remotely and you can't locally. There is no reset switch on the Modem either.

Because of this the customer's Internet was shut off by Wild Blue and they were penalized. We are attempting to get this taken off the account, get the modem reprogrammed, and we are dumping Windows for Linux putting the user back in control of their own computer.

So add this one to the list among the viruses that take out computer Bioses turning a Windows computer into a useless brick to be put into a landfill, identity theft, etc.

So just remember to keep using Windows because after all your use to using it. :D Or of course you could www.justuselinux.com

For those of you who are already using Linux and you feel left out all you need to do is:

Configure and install an SSH server to allow people to get into your computer.

Then you need to make sure to post your username and password for your computer publically online.

Then you can enjoy this same Windows experience in Linux.

JULinux 0.1.6.1f is here!

We thought JULinux 0.1.6.1b was going to be the final 0.1.6.1 but there were new advances we made in our scripting and overall ease of use for the Windows convert. After months of headaches, late nights, compiling custom .deb packages, JULinux theming scripts (not included with the distribution), doing lots of graphic art work in gimp, and listening to Windows users tell us what they like and dislike about Linux (as we have done in the past) I finally put out the 32 bit iso.

Screenshots

As we all know it's not just enough for Linux to be fast, stable, reliable, run millions of programs, be easy to use, and compatible with everything but for the Windows user it also has to look comfortable, familiar, save in Microsoft compatible formats by default (so their friends can open their files), have a babysitting feature where they can call for support for free, etc.

My DAD always complains that Linux looks too bland. ??? Even with Compiz, 3D desktop, Vista / 7 themes and everything, for some reason he thinks XP actually looks better ???

To be perfectly honest I hate flashy things on the desktop because they slow down your computer and cause video games to crash on occasion. It's nice if you want to show off or if your customer likes flashy things and they don't do a lot of gaming. I'm not planning on removing it from the distribution unless I need to save space.

I did find that in my 64 bit distribution by removing the usplash it boots in 30 seconds. I'm having trouble with my GUI config in the /etc/skel but I think I found a work around for that. It's the same bug in the 32 bit CD version. What I plan to do is include my install script that I have that makes JULinux look like JULinuXP in a hidden directory on the desktop as well as the installer also hidden. This way the Finish_Install.sh will first execute my theme script and make sure the Desktop looks all nice and pretty before doing anything else.

I can't believe how fast it all runs. One of the Major Ubuntu problems is PulseAudio. It hardly ever works as well as ALSA or solves any problems. I had to develop a script that removes PulseAudio and installs ALSA along with the ALSA mixer. PulseAudio will still try to start every split second. Ubuntu hard coded some sort of process that keeps checking if PulseAudio is started or not and keeps trying to start it. It just won't die. So removing it works.

The second Major Ubuntu problem is that a lot of dependencies Games need are not in the repos. They are however in pure Debian repos. My solution? You may not like it at first. If you remember back to the BigMac32_Install scripts they temporarily changed the sources.list file and then changed it back again. Well that's not a bad idea. The necessary files could all be hidden. What I could do is first install the Debian repos and then install the dependencies (only) and then copy the original sources.list file back and install the games from those repos. This would allow the dependencies to be installed without causing Pure Debian package conflicts. Unlike BigMac32 this would be optional and separate. In fact the entire Game install would depend on if the user typed Y and pressed enter after being asked if they wanted extra games.

JULinux x86 and x86_64 0.1.6.0+

SHHHHHHHHHHHH!

This is going to be really cool! Maybe it will help support our business and Youth Center.

Original article: www.mindblowingidea.com/Article.pdf

Family gets grandma a laptop for Christmas

Dec. 25--POMEROY -- Merry Christmas, Roberta Breithaupt. Here's your laptop computer, bought by your missionary son in Japan, sent back to the United States and refurbished right here in Pomeroy by your grandson Justin Breithaupt.

"She's going to be 92 pretty soon," Justin says of his grandmother. "The relatives have asked that she have a laptop so she can recline in her bed and still listen to her Christian radio shows and type letters."

His grandmother used to have a typewriter, Justin recalls. Then she got a desktop computer. But she's spending more time in bed, thus the need for a laptop.

"When she got the computer, she wouldn't go back to a typewriter."

While his grandmother has adapted to the computer world, Justin says he's always been immersed in it. "I've been doing computers all my life. Before I was in college, after I was in college, I've been doing computers."

A graduate of Walla Walla Community College, Justin, 24, says he's in the process of channeling his affinity for computer technology into a business that is the product of a calling.

"The sign out front says U.S.A. Computer Tech and Rescue, but we also call it the Pomeroy Youth Center."

In addition to selling new computers, refurbishing old computers and repairing both, Justin has opened the doors of his fledgling business to area youth. "The main goal is I let kids come in and play video games and use the computers after school. It's kind of a Christian youth center, more than a computer business."

Justin says he's trying to make enough money on the computer side to eventually go nonprofit and concentrate on the youth center idea -- complete with a video arcade and games he's created. "I plan to stay here. A lot of people think that you can't start something in Pomeroy, you can't survive, that businesses can't keep going. But I've got some program ideas."

The business is located on Main Street in a former welding shop that's stood dormant for years. Justin heats the cavernous building with wood. "My chain saw went out when I was cutting, so I've got to save up to get a new one."

Being an entrepreneur during a recession, Justin concedes, is a taxing proposition. But he keeps going back to the notion of a calling. "I never hear God's voice. It's more like thoughts and feelings. I was waiting for a definite answer, so I kept praying and praying about it." "

The prayers were answered, he claims, on Aug. 16, 2008, when he traveled to Moscow with a friend to meet a religious prophet who happened to be in town. "I went up there, and there was this lady (not the prophet) nobody even knew. And she came over to me and told me I needed to start my business and the Christian youth center. I thought, wow, I couldn't have asked for a better answer."

So Justin says he returned to Pomeroy, started renting the old welding shop and remains determined. "I have strong feelings that we need to be independent of the government as far as what we rely on and what we do. I think we need to be very independent."

And thanks to the woman he met, Justin says, he's heeded the calling. "She told me, 'When God tells you what to do, don't question it. Do it.' So that's what I've been doing and it's working out."

Which means, of course, that Justin's grandmother will get her newly refurbished used laptop computer today. "She's one of the oldest residents in Pomeroy and she's operated a desktop computer since 2007," Justin says as he continues to set up the laptop. Steve Breithaupt, who's working as a missionary in Japan, bought the computer and sent it home.

"I'm just loading the operating system on it, making sure the wireless is going to work, all that kind of stuff," Justin says. "It's not as vulnerable (as) other systems, except when older ladies push wrong buttons. It's the most universal bomb-proof operating system out there."

And hopefully, Justin says, his business will remain recession-proof and prove to be an asset to the community. "One of my uncles asked why I don't go to Seattle and work for Microsoft or one of the big companies. For me, that would be the easy way out."

His niche, Justin insists, is to stay put, find a way to buy the old welding shop, remodel it, go nonprofit and follow the calling.

"This is what I'm supposed to do. I'm not supposed to abandon this town and abandon these people."

---

Johnson may be contacted at djohnson@lmtribune.com or (208) 883-0564.

To see more of The Lewiston Morning Tribune or to subscribe to the newspaper, go to http://www.lmtribune.com.

Copyright (c) 2009, The Lewiston Morning Tribune, Idaho

Distributed by McClatchy-Tribune Information Services. Is that really true? It depends on what you watch your DVDs on and if they are Blue Ray or standard DVDs. I met a man who spent a great amount of money on a High Definition TV, and then on a Windows 7 Laptop with a connector for his TV. He bought these products with the understanding that he could watch his Blue Ray DVDs on his High Definition TV. When he stuck in his Blue Ray DVD into the Laptop it played fine in the Laptop Screen. He then purchased a cable for his TV and plugged it in. The DVD immediately stopped playing and a message came up on the screen letting him know it is not legal for him to watch his movie on his TV because it is copy written and protected by law. He could have been a potential criminal copying and selling illegal copies of his DVDs. The RIAA and Microsoft decided that my honest friend who bought his devices and movies legitimately should not have the right to use these devices to watch his movies any way he likes. This is only the beginning. According to the article I read here:http://www.defectivebydesign.org/mpaa-drm-tv the MPAA wants to take away our rights and abilities to record live TV to watch later and take control over all our devices we use to watch video and listen to audio in our home including Satellite receivers, TVs, VCRs, DVD Players, etc. The list does not end. What should come as more of a shock is that Microsoft is getting sueed by many other countries in anti-trust lawsuits for doing these things they have already done to us. Our Government officials however have decided not to sue or stop Microsoft for doing these things to us. Of course it's not just Microsoft. It's also Apple and Sony as well as anyone who produces Blue Ray DVD players. It's not the manufacturer's fault that they do this of course but rather the ones who legally force them to build these restrictions into their hardware. Does anyone remember when DVDs first came out? You had to have a program like WinDVD in order to decrypt the encrypted video so you could play it. You had to pay for this software if you didn't get it with your computer. Microsoft tried to convince everyone that without this player it was illegal to watch DVDs. We who use Linux knew better. We made and used libdvd to watch our DVDs without any restrictions. We could also download copies of them directly to our computers to watch later as it should be. Like DVDs use to be Blue Ray also does not play on Linux. Back to my customer who bought the Blue Ray DVD hardware and High Definition TV. I decided to try to watch the Blue Ray DVD on his TV using Linux. I figured I would have total control over his Laptop if I used Linux and I was right. After installing Linux onto his Laptop I discovered that there was no DVD player that could play Blue Ray for Linux but that each Blue Ray DVD contains an encrypted password that unlocks the content of the disk. You can find these keys on sites like these: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=120988 . Using DumpHD (found here: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=123111 ) with the keys I was then able to strip off all the encryption and download the content of the entire Blue Ray DVD to his Laptop Hard Drive. This took 20 Gbs for one disk. Using VLC I was then able to watch the extracted video on his HD TV which was the original intent when he purchased the equipment. Ridiculous isn't it. I'm not even sure if what I did to watch that video was legal or illegal and to be perfectly honest I don't care because it's a violation of our freedom of speech. If we can't listen then what is the use of free speech?

So I encourage you not to buy Blue Ray DVDs or DVD players and don't support any of the companies I mentioned that contribute to this ridiculous struggle for control. Also please go tohttp://www.defectivebydesign.org/mpaa-drm-tv and follow the instructions to send a letter to the FCC to stop any more of this nonsense.

Christian Computing

This Christmas when your buying gifts for your kids there is something important to keep in mind.

Christian Computing.

As we all know the Bible says Though shall not steal and Though shall not bear false witness.

First of all I'd like to tell you that most of you here have beared false witness without even knowing it because you all have computers with Microsoft or Mac software on them. When you turned on your computer or installed the software you agreed to an end user licence agreement that you probably didn't read. You are probably guilty of breaking every part of it and you probably don't even know it. So go ahead and look up the EULA for your software and read it and prove me wrong.

Second the Bible says though shall not steal. What if you can't afford software for your kids to use on their computer. Then your kids will most likelty download it illegally or make illegal copies of their friends software. This is stealing. The Bible says if our right hand causes us to sin we are to cut it off. This does not mean you need to throw your PC away.

You don't have to use Proprietary software from Microsoft and Apple on your computer. Go to www.justuselinux.com and download JULinux for free. It's a Christian computer operating system free from virus threats, fragmentation, and most other problems comercial operating systems face. Why am I grateful or Thankful as in Thanksgiving? Because it is not I alone who have solved these problems in my release and found new ways to do things in an automated fashion that is more simple to the end user but the living God within me who works threw my hands. Believe me the last thing I want to do is take credit for this Linux Distribution.

I could go on and on about what's new but I'll just give you a copy of the message I sent to Distrowatch.com

-----------------------------------------------------------

Name: JULinux or Just Use Linux
Website: www.justuselinux.com or www.mindblowingidea.com/JULinux
Downloads: FTP / HTTP http://www.mindblowingidea.com/mirror/JULinux_0.1.5.0c.iso
Torrent http://linuxtracker.org/index.php?page=torrent-details&id=cd28d4812fc839b7fd883f7ca0da9e8b25f6a700
(the files have been verified)
How to Install: http://www.mindblowingidea.com/HowToInstall (also there are screenshots on this page)
Based on: Ubuntu 8.04
Version: 0.1.5.0c 32 bit Stable

Desktop: Gnome / GDM
Ubuntu 8.04 based
32 bit

Specific to this version:
Bug fixes for: Finish_Install_Failsafe, Finish_Install_Online, Assaultcube, 7zip support, Usplash fix, PlayOnLinux fix, Automated Envy install, the boot loader, and many other bug fixes.
The Failsafe_Install now downloads 10 tar.gz files from our high speed ftp http server at www.mindblowingidea.com that add up to just under 4 GBs of packages needed to give the average user the experience that he or she deserves. The minimum system requirements for the complete install are 20 GB of HD space (9 GBs are needed during setup and then cleaned up), 128 MB (512 recommended), a standard video card (Direct X 9 or newer with 256 MB of dedicated memory recommended), a CD drive, and at least 800 Mhz (1.2 Ghz or faster recommended) cpu.

This release of JULinux is the most user friendly and easy to install yet.

JULinux in General:
About: JULinux is a Linux distribution that fits on a single CD but includes codecs, games, utilities, players, and other applications most commonly used after it's properly installed. It also has full Office 2007 compatibility and saves in Microsoft Office friendly formats by default. It's perfect for any Windows user to move over to. Also it comes with the most recent version of PlayOnLinux installed for installing Microsoft Games and Programs if the user should wish to. It has a lot of support that was lost after ubuntu 8.04 for games that run in wine. Also the included version of Firefox is a lot more stable than what comes with more modern based distributions. For more information please go to www.justuselinux.com and read our blog, subscribe to our mailing list, look at our forums, etc. A 64 bit version will be in the works.

In the future:
We will be releasing a new version if this distribution with better hardware support and maybe a better Failsafe_Installer script.
We will also be putting together a version of JULinux without the games geared more towards Office and Mobile hardware. The HD requirements should be much smaller. The advantage will be all of the same Windows friendly experiences without all the unnecessary games.

Packages:

2h4u<br Then when people click welcome.sh it will show them step by step how to install JULinux and won't show the hideous background you see in the current one.

Thanks for your consideration.

If you need any more information please reply to this e-mail or call 509-843-2414 (10:30 AM - 8 PM Pacific Standard Time)

Thanks.

JULinux 0.1.5.0c is out now.

I finished uploading JULinux yesterday. I've tested it here and it worked 100% without glitches of any kind when doing the install in the proper order. I am not convinced yet that it is perfect or without glitches so that's why I haven't anounced it on Sourceforge.net or the torrent sites. You can go to www.justuselinux.com and click download and get a copy if you like. All the notes are there. Please test it out for me and let me know what you think. Why? We have made the install process completely automated. All you have to do is agree with it and answer a few questions.

This time we used a graphical GRUB boot loader that is compatible with more systems and it just looks better. We also fixed the Splashy by replacing it with Usplash and adding a custom theme. I'm sure you will also like the welcome message at the gdm log in screen. ;)

Ultamatix will automatically start when ready and install all of your favourite extras (with the exception of OpenOffice.org 3.0 and extra OpenOffice.org Clip Art) After Ultamatix is finished Envy will automatically open and prompt the user to install their NVIDIA or ATI driver. If this fails to work after a reboot the user is instructed to download and install their driver manually in the simplest terms possible.

Assaultcube now actually installs! Even though playdeb's repos and Ubuntu's repos don't support Assaultcube in 8.04 you will find that it will install and function properly.

Our new Failsafe Installer requires 3 GB less storage space on the Hard Drive during install.

I think you will agree that this version of JULinux is by far the best we have ever put out. All known bugs have been fixed. All that's left to do now is to compile a new updated kernel so that the drivers will be up to date. That's the next step.

Our new installer does a very nice, clean job of installing and cleans up after itself even during the installation. The new installer requires 3 GB less than the previous one and also includes more packages and dependencies. It also meets all the requirements for assault cube thanks to the pure Debian repositories. The new installer is nicely devided up into 10 down loadable files that no longer depend on a giant torrent but a new installer that downloads each individual file and extracts each one to the /tmp directory and then executes install.sh. After the install is complete all files including the install scripts are deleted from the /tmp directory. Ultumatix is included and also envy to provide NVIDIA and ATI drivers. The standard Ubuntu repositories just don't have new enough drivers. In some cases you may need to manually download and install the drivers from www.nvidia.com for your video card. To run this driver simply download the .run or .bin file, reboot your computer in recovery mode, drop to root shell, and cd to the directory (Example cd /home/owner/Desktop) and type ./*.run or ./*.bin and start the installation. Only do this after trying envy. DO NOT UNINSTALL the envy drivers. Just install this driver over top and then the nvidia-settings program will stay installed. :)

As far as wireless you will want to buy wireless cards from us to make sure they work with Linux until the next version with the new kernel is released.

In the future we hope to have a fully working Python installer with a GUI and the newest kernel fully compiled and installed for 8.04 32 bit and 64 bit.

As for USA Computer Tech Computer Rescue and the Christian Youth Center the future looks very promising. We are currently working on securing funds for a new revolutionary computer program. If we are successful the funding will not only fund this project but the profit will enable us to fund many more projects I already have planned in the future. The current project will take 3 - 4 years to complete after we get funding. Don't ask me to give out any details because I'm not going to yet. Of course there are those of you who will receive this message and already know what I'm talking about.

I'm very excited about this bug free release of JULinux 0.1.5.0c (or at least I pray it's bug free) and it's pure simplicity for the end user if nothing else. I realize it does not have that same ease of use Ubuntu 9.10 has for installing wireless devices. Oh well. This distribution is
not designed around fussy laptops and net-books but around Desktops.

What about those of you who don't like my CD with an installer that just vomits everything on your computer and fills it up and those of you who Just want to install it on Laptops? For those of you who don't prefer the vomit I'll be putting out a vomit free version of JULinux on DVD with all the Wireless support and everything but without the games and other large applications. Of course you will need to install the codecs yourself. That's the price you pay for not using my CD version :)

So lets get down to business How to Install JULinux 0.1.5.0c on your computer:

(*AT NO TIME SHOULD YOU CLOSE THE TERMINAL WINDOW!*)

1. Go to www.justuselinux.com and download the .iso either threw the torrent or directly from our ftp / http server.
-----Step 2 is mostly for Windows users all others feel free to skip-------
2. Install a free CD burning app. Any should do. Reboot Windows, Right click on the .iso and burn it.
3. Boot from the CD and install JULinux. (Don't click on Finish Install Failsafe yet.) Reboot.
4. Now double click Finish_Install_Failsafe.sh > Run in Terminal > Wait for the download(s) to complete.
5. Type in the password you gave the computer during setup. Wait for the installer to complete. You may need to answer questions and type your password in again from time to time.
6. When synaptic opens fix any broken packages:
a. Edit > Fix Broken Packags
b. Apply
c. Close Synaptic when it finishes.
7. Agree to Ultamatix > Install anything extra you want > Don't worry about failures and exit it.
8. Use Envy when it opens to install your NVIDIA or ATI drivers if you have an ATI or NVIDIA card.
>>>>(If you reboot which you should then after the reboot)<<<<<<
9. Copy the shortcut to "Legends" from inside your home folder (Click start, places, My Documents) to your desktop so you can play it. Simple! Right? Let me know. Go to www.justuselinux.com and click Feedback on the left side or
Send e-mail to Ultumix-discussion@lists.sourceforge.net or
Use our forum.

To the Lord God Jesus Christ be the glory for this distribution.
Justin.

Linux Penguins announcement.

http://linuxninjapenguins.blogspot.com/2009/11/how-ninja-penguins-defy-space-and-time.html

Join in the fight with TUX. As you can see today when I took this picture at 1:50 PM Pacific Time my views are already at over 500. JustUseLinux is getting a lot of attention but from where and who I don't know. The phone keeps ringing. People are even thinking about sending donations! WOW! Our Christian Youth Centre might get donations! That would be nice. Right now to make ends meet I put all my computer repair money into the youth centre and can't afford my medication or other living expenses. I have faith the Lord Jesus Christ will take care of all these things.

JULinux 0147 is available.

What is JULinux? http://pediaopeness.wetpaint.com/page/JULinux+Just+Use+Linux

Bug Fixes in this version:

*Fixed missing human.xml bug.
*Fixed bad system sounds.
*Fixed PlayOnLinux install version repository in BigMac32 Installer
*Fixed Online Installer as well

Bugs still to be fixed.
*Splashy does not work right out of the box.
-- To fix this after the initial install just go to the Gnome start button, System > Administration > Start Up Manager. It's got all the Linux Games everyone loves + PlayOnLinux + all the codecs you could ever want + Utilities, and Media Players. It even has Office 2007 compatibility but not without the extra install scripts you will find on the desktop.

These install scripts require that you agree that it's legal in your country to install these fun things and then it installs them for you. The Tar.gz file attached includes 3.7 of the 3.8 GBs of packages you will need. (We stripped out the illegal ones and told it to just download them) You could download this from our server automatically using the Failsafe script (that downloads it to your desktop, extracts it, and executes the contents) but without a 7 Megabit internet connection or higher the chances that the download will get interrupted are very high. Also the complete Failsafe script won't be available for download from www.mindblowingidea.com until 10/10/09 so please don't try to get it now or you will just get a partial download.

If your computer can use DVDs then I suggest you make a Data DVD disk and put the Tar.gz file on it first and then after installing JULinux just copy it to the desktop and run the Failsafe script.

You can also use a portable HD or SSD with at lest 4 GB of space on it. If you are going to be booting from the same HD or SSD then make sure you have 5 GB of space.

I like unetbootin. It works well.

This distribution was based on Ubuntu 8.04 32 bit for a reason. It's because networking in Wine seems to work better. CNC3 will actually game online and on LAN. For some reason people seem to have forgotten that things like this use to work and now don't on the newer distributions. Be careful what you upgrade and what repositories you add or you might just ruin it. If it does not network right out of the box then try downgrading wine. Just a thought.

I know in JULinux 0.1.2.5 it worked just fine.

In Live mode you may notice that on some computers it complains about Gnome Settings. This is ok. Just ignore it.

If for some reason the Failsafe script extracts all of the code and then exits without installing anything open the BigMac32_Install_Failsafe folder on the desktop and double click on install.sh. Then click Run in Terminal. I've had this problem on one install out of 10. Don't know why.

Read more: http://linuxtracker.org/index.php?page=torrent-details&id=dd7d62d15ac40c905f776f583916055b8b6aa622#ixzz0THZMCBOa

WWW.JUSTUSELINUX.COM !!! It was available! :) Also we are in the edge of releasing a stable JULinux that has all the capabilities we've previously offered plus more. We have added a Full Install script that installs everything you need. The cool part is we also added a Failsafe install script that downloads with the .deb packages needed to install everything! So no more broken repos or whatever. It also copies all the packages into apt's cache directory so that synaptic and apt-get won't complain about dependencies. It also opens synaptic at the end and instructs the user to check for broken packages. This is Sweet! Why do we think this? Well it's because 8.10 and 9.04 just don't seem to play nice in the long run. We don't know why. Some of the packages and features are missing and in 9.04 the button to turn off the computer in Gnome is by the clock instead of on the familiar left side of the screen. General faults and programs crashing are much more evident than in 8.04. Yet if we are forced to upgrade 8.04, it's programs, and their dependencies the OS becomes more unstable. It's very similar to Microsoft's Windows in that if you use Windows XP SP2 it's the best version of Windows Microsoft ever put together but when you start upgrading to SP3 and adding newer components it turns into Vista. For example in Ubuntu 8.04 32 bit it was not only possible but common to install Command and Conqueror 3 Tiberium Wars in Wine and the network play was flawless. Now if you install it you can't use network play after upgrading. PlayOnLinux still supports the patch for online play even though it doesn't effect anything because it no longer works as proof that it once worked. Call of Duty 4 is another example. Once you could run servers that were visible on the internet but now it's almost impossible.
So what do we get in trade for all of this? More hardware support, newer games are supported in wine, and it runs faster. Is it worth it?
Ask yourself this question. If you are a Guitar Hero fan (assume you are) and you play FOF or Frets on Fire on Linux and you notice it only runs properly on 32 bit installs of Linux when you know your computer runs faster with a 64 bit OS what do you choose?
Here is another question. What if you were me? What if you spent hours working on figuring out how to get lets say Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare servers working properly in Linux and being recognized on the internet. Now imagine that Wine is altered and upgraded and COD4 no longer works properly with network play. Now you see where I'm going with this.
How about Audacity? It use to have a fully working pitch changer (not speed / tempo changer) built into it but in the upgraded version that comes with Ubuntu and is automatically upgraded on older versions, you can't have a pitch changer.
Who decides what to keep and what to leave behind? Why leave anything behind? If something does not work when we upgrade and patch it means that we have broken something. If breaking something makes something else work then we need to find another way.

How to install Call of Duty World At War on Linux in Wine!

Depending on your version of Call of Duty World at War your Install might go perfectly well all on it's own and you may never need to use this guide at all.

That's right! You read it here first! 09/11/09 How to install Call of Duty World At War on Linux :)

If this helped you please donate to us: http://www.mindblowingidea.com/Donate.html This was not easy, it took me more than one day steady to get this all figured out and working. I stayed up long hours on this. Our youth center needs the money.

What you will need:

JULinux from http://www.mindblowingidea.com/JULinux (not the alpha) or Ubuntu 9.04 or above.

PlayOnLinux with COD4 installed.

Two DVD set or CDs of Call of Duty World at War.

You will need to make an .iso of all of your CODWAW disks.

Extract all of the .iso files to folders.

No CD/DVD patch for version 1.5

The newest version of Wine.

Ok assuming you have already installed Call of Duty 4 in PlayOnLinux lets continue.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
STOP! You need to make some registry changes.

copy the XAudio2_0.dll into the ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32 directory. Download XAudio2_0.dll from http://rapidshare.de/files/41317359/XAudio2_0.dll.html

Save the following to a .txt file. I called mine Registry.txt

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Activision]
@=""

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Activision\Call of Duty WAW]
"InstallPath"="C:\\Program Files\\Activision\\Call of Duty - World at War\\"
"InstallDrive"="C:\\"
"Language"="enu"
"Version"="1.0"
"EXEStringS"="C:\\Program Files\\Activision\\Call of Duty - World at War\\CoDWaW.exe"
"EXEStringM"="C:\\Program Files\\Activision\\Call of Duty - World at War\\CoDWaWmp.exe"
"QA"="22.0"
"Techhelp"="C:\\Program Files\\Activision\\Call of Duty - World at War\\Docs\\Help\\readme.htm"
"StartMenuFolder"="C:\\Documents and Settings\\All Users\\Startmenu\\Programs\\Activision\\Call of Duty - World at War"
"UninstallString"="C:\\Program Files\\InstallShield Installation Information\\{D80A6A73-E58A-4673-AFF5-F12D7110661F}\\uninstall.exe -runfromtemp -l0x0409"

Import this into the Registry by goign to PlayOnLinux and clicking on Call of Duty 4. Then click Configure this Application. Edit the Registry. Now just tell it to import a file and make sure to tell it to view all files. Go to your Desktop or wherever you put your registry.txt file and select it.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After you have extracted the iso files mentioned above you will need to open PlayOnLinux.
Next click Install and select the link at the bottom for other application.
Edit an existing app.
COD4 > Next
Don't configure your Wine.
Go to your 1st DVD of CODWOW (stick your DVD in your PC) and select setup.exe or install.exe depending on what you have.
Click next.
Get threw the install as far as you can. This will make important registry entries. If and when it fails continue. If not congratulations you have got further than I have.
Ok now take those extracted .iso folders and copy the /setup/Data/ contents into your
/home/Your User Name here/.PlayOnLinux/wineprefix/COD4/drive_c/Program Files/Activision/Call of Duty - World at War folder. Do this for each extracted folder first to last. Merge all.
Now make sure you download and install the 1.2 Patch, 1.2-1.4 Patch, and then the 1.5 Patch.
During these installs it will say Call of Duty World at War is not installed would you like to specify the directory. Just play along with it. It will copy files into your directory you didn't know you needed to put there. Also after one of the Patches you will want to create your shortcuts to start the game. Just look under Program Files, Activision, Call of duty world at war and you will find the main game executables.
Now if you have that No CD/DVD patch (I recommend www.gamecopyworld.com) stick it in the Call of Duty World At War directory (/home/Your User Name here/.PlayOnLinux/wineprefix/COD4/drive_c/Program Files/Activision/Call of Duty - World at War) over top of the one that's there. Make sure you get the one for 1.5 unless you have a newer patch installed and then you will want to use a no cd patch for that version.

Finally click on your game in PlayOnLinux and click Install. Now go to Other and install Direct X Runtime. Select August 2009.

When you start CODWAW Single Player and Multiplayer make sure that you configure the video the same way you did for COD4. No antiailising and turn off all the effects. 1024 x 768 is the magic number for resolution.

To get your sound to work right click on this link http://bugs2.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=18560 and click save as Sound.reg and patch your registry the same way you did with the txt file.

Now you are good to go! far as online play is concerned you can play on LAN. Just ignore what it says.

Sound still does not work.
According to the error in the game it wants Windows mixer to be set up right. I think this means a registry change is needed. If anyone can figure it out it would be greatly appreciated.

According to WineHQ's comments it's not a registry error but a lack of support for a sound format.

-----------------------OPTIONAL-----------------------

install k-lite codec pack so that when your registry is correct you can get sound.

---------------------NOTES---------------------------
Your key is entered as codekey in the Registry under software and activision, When you attempt to install COD5 it will let you make the registry entry for your key and I think it does other things as well. It always gets stuck on a msi file for some reason for me. I'm sure not all of you will have the same experience. I'm hoping that PlayOnLinux can learn from this and make a script to do all of this in a shorter way.

Transformers 2 What? The kids here at the Youth Center we run (for promotion of Linux and Christianity) decided they wanted to watch Transfomers 2 in the movie theater. Transformer's is harmless right? Just a good old cartoon that we use to watch as kids and they added some 3D special effects and made it look real right? Ya but they had to go and screw it all up by adding in a lot of sexual stuff that was never meant to be there in the first place. One of the tiny robots was ******* a girl and there was a *** bot that tried to rape / molest the main character, and there were other things that just didn't need to be in there.

Why is it that any American classic made new again must contain this kind of stuff? Where is it written? Maybe it's just the movie writers trying to get us to accept this kind of living as normal so that we can bring sex right out in the open and participate in it with each other as openly as they discuss it on TV. The whole thing makes me very upset.

According to this article http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire/index.php?category=0&id=40510 they had to fight to get PG 13 and not R.

I'm 80% sure I heard the F word in there. This movie is not PG 13.

Action and Fighting I have no problem with but perversion I do.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://justuselinux.blogspot.com/2009/06/transformers-2-what-why-is-that-listed.html' title='Transformers 2 What? We need to know what you want in your Linux. Right now we have scripts called the following:

Install All Your Favorite Games! (Optional)

Install Extra Codecs (recommended)

Install Utilities (recomended)

Ultamatix (recomended) -- Currently down until the repo is back up again

Ultimate Edition Themes (Optional if you want that Ultimate Edition look)

Update Your System to 9.10 UNSTABLE! (Absolutely not recommended!)

Video Editor Installer (Optional)

If you have ideas for other scripts or what to put in these scripts please reply here and let us know. Thanks :)

JULinux Alpha 0.1.2.5 is available for download here: http://www.mindblowingidea.com/JULinux

So Why The Scripts?
The idea here was to make a Linux Distribution that was able to work with WINE flawlessly, support all the Linux supported games, while at the same time fitting on a CD. The scripts will install everything else including openoffice.org after you install off the CD. This way anyone can install JULinux. After the final stable release of JULinux is put out on CD we will make a DVD version with the same scripts that will have some of these most common programs already installed.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://justuselinux.blogspot.com/2009/05/julinux-alpha-0125-is-out-now-its-your.html' title='JULinux Alpha 0.1.2.5 Is Out !
